All 'New' Picture Card Series Updated...

SUPERMANIA is pleased to report that progress continues on the Superman IV trading card project now that designs have been refined by SuperFan Alexei Lambley-Steel to better match cards from the era (In the late '80's card numbers were relegated to the rear and titles were changed to uppercase!) while the descriptive card backs telling the story (written by myself) are currently at the halfway point.
As we are presenting the set based on an idealized version of the the film in its complete, uncut form, the story is being adapted using both the DC Comics Special and the novelisation by B.B Hiller. This presents the opportunity to use images from cut scenes while filling in the gaping plot holes from the theatrical version in an attempt to make it a coherent whole. While my archive of quality stills is used in its entirety, Alex and I agreed the only way to convey the story properly was to use screengrabs, the first excellent results of which we present above. Stay tuned for further updates of this exciting project..!

The Gospel According To Byrne...

Despite his own legendary status, British artist/writer John Byrne was all-too aware of the responsibility of revamping Superman's origin story to the point where he likened the assignment to being handed the bible and told to 'fix this'.
In 1986, however, fixing was exactly what it needed. By the late eighties comic audiences had grown more sophisticated and though he'd entertained for almost fifty years, Superman was starting to show his age. Once again it seems ironic that the Man of Tommorow's four-color regeneration would borrow so heavily from its cinematic adaptation first screened almost a decade before. Indeed, ill-advised midway appearance from Batman notwithstanding, structure-wise the six-part Man Of Steel series could easily pass for another draft of Superman: The Movie. Far from denying the film's influence, however, Byrne openly embraces by admittedly rendering his hero in the perfect likeness of the film's star. Among these beautifully crafted pages there are re-tellings of both Krypton and Smallville segments at once touching and economical by ousting any mention of SuperBoy and allowing the Kents to survive as a continuing influence. These, among other narrative touches (like the feisty character of Lois Lane and the introduction of Lex Luthor as a corporate vulture) in turn clearly had an impact on the producers of Lois & Clark where they were retained for television. The Movie sequels are acknowledged too with Byrne showing us in Part 5 what Superman III should have been in considerable style.
Ultimately though, Man Of Steel remains a solid milestone in the continuing journey of Superman's fight to stay contemporary. So tight was Byrne's re-imagining it survived as canon right up until last year, but that's another story...

Hot from SuperFan Alex Serpa comes these pristine vintage Japanese VHS video tapes in original cases. Though in NTSC format Alex reliably informs me "The picture quality on the tapes is amazing ... for VHS that is. Surpassing any of the British/U.S. VHS. The print is so clear and the colors vibrant". A Dynamic Duo...

For a comic collection heralded by Variety as 'An invigorating, entertaining and modern take on the Man of Steel' its ironic how many elements of the fantastic 'Superman, Brainiac' story are a clear throwback to 1978. Indeed, writer Geoff Johns, fresh from a successful collaboration with director Richard Donner for 'Superman, Last Son' continued to evoke the style and spirit of the Superman Movies by next teaming up with influential artist Gary Frank. In a tale that could so easily be the basis for a fifth movie set in that continuity, Johns integrates tribute after homage to the first two movies with similar verisimilitude and drama contrasted by tongue-in-cheek. With Frank's pencils unashamedly bringing both Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder back to life on the page seemingly picking up where the films left off the result is a satisfying tale and a rare treat in the current DC continuity...
SUPERMANIA presents the first graphic novel in a series of recommended reading tailored purely for fans of the movies with accompanying images. Comments welcome...!

Long-rumoured to be a project on the table of US company Sideshow Collectables it would seem by the image above taken from their website that they have indeed aquired the license to the classic Superman movies. Though by no means a final design this concept art is markedly similar to a pose from the Hot Toys marketing campaign which was itself derived from the levitating pose of Toynami's Cinemaquette. One hopes as the project evolves a stance representing one of the scenes depicted in the Movie or publicity pics will offer some much-needed diversity. More updates as they develop...

From the top - one of a rare series of studio portraits never before seen in its entirety, an on-set candid of Christopher Reeve holding a taxi aloft, between takes on location in Milton Keynes, England, and a shot from the excised scene where Nuclearman II elevates cars during the Metropolis street battle. The stunning image above represents the first offering in a creative partnership dedicated to celebrating the tenure of Christopher Reeve as the Man Of Steel. Noted costume makers Action Costumes have been supplying fans with the ultimate in Superman costumes for some years and are tentatively expanding their portfolio under the artistic direction of SuperFan Sebastian Columbo. Besides the upcoming prints (this being the first of hopefully many more to follow) the first of Seb's projects is the sculpting of a 1:1 Superman figure which AC will present as a fully-costumed display piece in the new year. Arnie Kim Strikes Again Updated...

Progress pics taken from Master Arnie Kim's Facebook page reveal his personal 1/4 scale statue project is slowly coming to almost tangeble life. In similar fashion to his 1/6 masterpiece for Hot Toys, the kiss-curl will presumably be a seperate piece to be added later. Even at this early stage the paint tests show an incredible translucency of skin tone echoed by the subtle facial expression. As stated, for now this remains a personal project but with fan demand and Hot Toys recently announcing their new venture into the 1/4 scale market one wonders how long it will stay that way...

Rare global press coverage from the shooting of Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, the first (and last) of the Movie series to be made entirely on location in England. The cast & crew had assembled in the sports grounds of the Woughton campus of the Sir Frank Markham School in Milton Keynes, England in late 1986 to shoot the closing moments of the picture under the direction of Sidney J. Furie. The facility had apparently been chosen due to the school being one of the few with American Football on the curriculum and used in return for a new set of kit for the team. Ironically, the scene was excised entirely from the final cut of the film and thought lost until its final discovery and release (in workprint form) in the Deluxe Edition DVD from 2006. Fade To Grey...

In continuation of this post documenting the original Superman costume exhibited in Planet Hollywood, Orlando, the images above show that by 2002 the display had been torn from the ceiling of the Downtown Disney site and relocated to the restaurant lobby. Shoddily remounted on a questionable chain-bearing mannequin, the new broken wall diorama was shielded behind an acrylic tube and adorned with a helpful new sign. The costume's condition had deteriorated badly in the few years between visits and the bodysuit had faded to almost silver-grey but as it was the first prop visible in the building it was still a sight to behold with everybody entering pausing to stare at it in wonder...
In typical Planet Hollywood fashion, however, the costume would disappear the following year never to be seen again, to my knowledge it wasn't circulated further so the fate of this particular piece remains unknown.

My apologies for these dreadful flash-glare pictures - despite my best efforts at the time it was early days for my photography...!

The Yellow Belt...

Pictured above is the vital first component I managed to secure that would initiate my pursuit of the perfect replica Superman costume. As most fanmade efforts throughout the nineties would demonstrate, the lack of correct belt and buckle would be the undoing of the most valiant attempts. After a long search a small set of perfect resin casts taken from one of Christopher Reeve's original belts finally found me. Developing a matching belt would be almost as difficult a proposition in my research stage as at the time the only reference was a clip from TV documentary 'The Making Of Superman'. From that I ascertained the belt itself was a fabric-backed vinyl - however locating such a thing in mustard yellow proved impossible. Instead I sought to improvise and so in true prop style I concocted a belt made from kitchen floor lino covered in yellow sticky-back plastic. While the results were good the plastic would eventually weaken and split due to its inflexibility. Many attempts later I came across more pliable plastic and have made numerous belts since then for fans and professionals alike, chances are you've seen one of my belts on display on many a full-size replica either online or in-person. Pictured above are two of the last belts I have - a 'Hero' version made from genuine Patent leather and a 'Stunt' version built using my method. Over the years costumiers and fans have caught up and developed credible versions of their own but for such a minor accoutrement, there is no subsitute for the genuine buckle cast to complete a replica...

Ultimate Superman 1:1 Update...

Two years since this project was first initiated, the kit has returned home unfinished after artist John May sadly had to abandon it due to work commitments. As shown in the pics above the mannequin has had much of the preparation work done and simply awaits final assembly and realistic paintjob. The fantastic artificial eyes (currently held in by Blu-Tac) from Tech-Optics.com, impressive in photographs are stunning in-hand and bring the excellent sculpt to eerie life.
Finally, the great breaking news is another celebrated FX artist has expressed interest in completing the project and will be taking delivery soon...!

Further selections from the Superman novel back-catalogue include possibly the finest of them all - from top - 'The Making Of Superman: The Movie' by David Michael Petrou is a disarmingly honest account of the largest and most expensive production of its day. Aside from the thorough coverage of everything from casting to Special Effects, Petrou manages also to convey the sheer excitement and magic of bringing the Man of Steel to life. Read it online here at Superman1978.

Despite its fun tagline 'Once upon a time-warp' the novelisation of Supergirl by Norma Fox Mazer is standard Movie Tie-In fare built almost word for word around the screenplay by David Odell (made even less appealing by its lack of picture gallery in the centre!)

Before its shoe-in as the novelisation of Superman: The Movie (offered among the glut of other glossy offerings from Warner Books) Elliot S! Maggin's origin story 'Last Son of Krypton' was first published by Arrow in 1978. As the events depicted within (although well-executed) bear little resemblance to the final film the comic-book style cover was far more appropriate.

Lastly, the 'Man of Steel' by Andrew Helfer was released in 1983 under the banner of the popular 'Super Powers' toy line by Kenner. This 'which way' book (where the reader has the option to choose the story's outcome as he reads) was popular in the '80's and is written in the style of pure comic-book fodder.

Dear Hot Toys -

As your Superman: The Movie figure is landing on the doorsteps of many grateful fans the world over and pictures of your latest creation are flying up all over the 'net it would seem that any concerns anybody may have had about the finished product were not only unfounded but instead addressed with considerable style.

While SUPERMANIA and community of SuperFans take no credit whatsoever for any changes that may or may not have been implemented to this piece of 1/6 art we nevertheless salute your team's dedication to making this possibly the ultimate Superman collectible and perhaps more importantly, a fitting tribute to our hero Christopher Reeve.

For many collectors this was their 'grail' figure, and in an age where Superheroes saturate Movie screens our love for the first and best of them all remains undiminshed. Finally after a thirty year wait you have rewarded us with the toy we all wanted as kids back when we all left cinemas believing a man could fly.

It is important to remember that a portion of the sale of this figure goes to the Christopher & Dana Reeve paralaysis Foundation and by purchasing it you honour a cause the man himself was so passionate about. Seven years ago today we lost the actor who made us believe a Man Could Fly. In a celebration of the man and his achievements I present four of the best volumes chronicling his rise to stardom through to his tragic accident and finally to leaving a legacy.
The first of these is a vintage paperback charting Reeve's rise to fame by Margery Steinberg. While this is composed mainly of gossip-magazine style trash it still has some nice pictures in the centre and is fairly rare today.
Sadly the larger biographies would come as a result of renewed interest in Reeve due to his paralysis, the first, 'Man Of Steel' competently written by Adrian Havill nonetheless portrays Reeve as an ambitious but charismatic individual, concentrating on his acting career. The third volume, 'Superhero' by music journalist Chris Nickson is a more straightforward but well-researched bio spliced with decent b&w photos.
Reeve himself set the record straight in 1998 with his powerful autobiography Still Me, a touching reflection of his new life in a wheelchair with long flashbacks of a glittering career. Reeve pulls no punches with his views of both politics and his work to portray a humble family man refusing to accept his fate lightly while providing hope for others well beyond his years...

The 'Movie Tie-In' novel was a familiar and obligatory item of merchandise issued to coincide with most of the Blockbusters of the 70's and 80's. Usually written economically and with little insight they were often more prized for the photo galleries adorning the centre pages. Despite appearances, the novels shown in the top two pics are not literary transitions of Superman: The Movie nor Superman II due to the mess of litigation regarding story ownership (also impeding a comic-book adaptation) and are instead 'new' takes on the origin story and other adventures by comic-writer Eliot S! Maggin.
A change of writers for the sequels permitted more standard releases and in the case of Superman III Author William Kotzwinkle (E.T.) an injection of a more adult tone into the screenplay by peppering the dialogue with such gems as 'Holy 'O Shitcakes' and suchlike. By stark contrast, B.B. Hiller's Novelisation of Superman IV is virtually a children's book. Decades later the nostalgic quaintness of these publications is surpassed by the desire to see Mario Puzo's script for Superman's I&II collected as an epic Godfather-esque novel. Stranger things have happened...

These photographs shot only last week at the Ani-Com & Games Guangzhou reveal a very interesting development with the Superman: The Movie figure on display in the ever-popular Hot Toys booth.
Check the Super Figures/statues history of this blog for thorough coverage of this long-awaited offering and you'll see more photographs of the prototype, and later a small campaign initiated by SUPERMANIA in an attempt to highlight potential improvements. With the figure slated as having a Q4 release and expected within the coming months, it would appear Hot Toys has typically risen to fans expectations and 'tweaked' the headsculpt in advance.
Master sculptor Arnie Kim had already acknowledged concerns about the prototype in a recent post on Facebook with a cryptic message telling us not to worry as 'Hot Toys is perfect' (sic) which did indeed hint there would be a revision before production...

Still sorely missed his influence and spirit are stronger than ever seen through the eyes of his children (see here) as they continue to campaign for his beloved cause while we watch them grow to be the echo of their father. Meddings' Miniature Magic...

Startling in their primitive simplicity yet state of the art for the time, the models pictured above were given as a post-production gift to a lucky fan by the legendary Derek Meddings.
Still in the hands of that same collector more than thirty years later, they are a fine example of the craftsmanship associated with old-school filmaking. Meddings, (1931-1995) was nothing less than the Godfather of the industry with his work on both Superman: The Movie and Superman II among some of his most accomplished. Elegantly documented in the book 'Special Effects Superman' you may be suprised just how many big effects sequences in popular Films & TV he was directly responsible for and the influence he has to this day.
Photographed next to a penny for scale, the Superman flying miniature was most likely production made rather than screen used potentially as a 'marker' for the frame. The radar dishes, however, come directly from the Eiffel Tower 'maxiture' as evidenced by the screengrab (bottom pic, upper right). This was one of the many detailed pieces made to furnish the 75ft tall tower constructed from various metals and shot on the backlot of Pinewood Studios. Legend has it after shooting the model was held in such high regard it was re-located to the Pinewood Gardens, where it was to become a permanent feature. Sadly as it was within the vicinity of the bar, it was destroyed due to a drunken employee's attempt to climb it, King-Kong style...

Freeborn's Fibreglass Folly...

Once described by Newsweek columnist Jack Kroll as having a face 'as sharp & strong as an axe blade' Christopher Reeve's features were ideally suited for the transition of Superman from the comic-book page to Silver Screen. Pictured from top is the very latest addition to my collection both echoing this sentiment and representing the end of a personal crusade to locate and obtain this rarest of 'lifecasts' of the man himself.
While the origins and lineage of this particular piece are unknown, it is indisputably a genuine cast taken of Reeve's face during the production of the Superman films by make-up guru Stuart Freeborn (bottom pic, Far left). Freeborn (who turned 97 this past week!) is a bona-fide legend in the industry and remained makeup Supervisor for all four Reeve pictures. Besides famously serving as the face model for Yoda, Freeborn was responsible for the differentiation in appearance between Clark & Superman as well as the vile demeanour for his Evil persona in Superman III. As illustrated in the last pic, Freeborn made multiple casts of the principals mainly for infrequently-used stand-in dummies (e.g. The Fire & Ice scene in Superman: The Movie) and other Effects sequences but despite this, few were thought to exist beyond the end of production. Indeed, the only evidence of a surviving example was featured in a lot offered some years ago from the Freeborn estate by the Propstore Of London and was snapped up for a handsome price even in its battered state, making this newly-discovered sharper example all the more desirable...

HOT off the press comes this electrifying image of the latest sculpt from the legendary Arnie Kim. it is unclear at this time whether or not this revised sculpt of Christopher Reeve will be the final one used in Hot Toys upcoming figure release.
Whereas I thought very highly of the prototype figure, to my eyes, this is the visage of the Superman from the first two movies with his slightly broader face, thick neck and more rounded hair (featuring a much-better defined 'S' curl!!) the eyebrows & chin are a marked improvement also. Comparing this with the prototype makes the latter look like an older, slighter version of Reeve similar to his appearance in Superman IV with his straight hairline and thinner face. As I've stated before, Hot Toys are that rare breed of company that listens to their fans so there is a real opportunity here - lobby their facebook page and tell them just how good this is and maybe, just maybe we'll be lucky enough to get it...
UPDATE: The bust pictured top is a 'painting simulation' of a private 1/4 scale by the artist. Due to the overwhelming positive reaction Arnie Kim has reassured his fans "Please don't worry, Hottoys (sic) is perfect!" on his facebook page, hinting that tweaks may well have been made for the final figure...

Metropolis Auto Breakers Yard Find...

This latest addition to my collection is a generous gift from fellow SuperFan Alexei Lambley-Steel who, after enquiring about a single prop was offered a large set of screenused items!
Shown above is a genuine set-used/screen-used prop US car numberplate from Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. The timing of this aquisition could not be better in view of the fact they are now clearly identifiable on the recently-released Blu-Ray disc (and not, unfortunately, from the DVD screengrabs above) proving the plate 774 LPS makes its first appearance on Lacy Warfield's car as it pulls up outside the UN. It later adorns the front of a white sedan (far left in screengrab) whose roof is torn off during Nuclearman's tantrum before finally being scorched by the car next to it as its engulfed in a fireball. Constrained by budgetary restrictions, the same vehicles appear over and over on the Elstree set, including a portion stripped of their engines and crushed by the battle with the first Nuclear Man from the deleted scenes (bottom pic)...

The Global selling of a Super-Sequel often yields some interesting slants on advertising besides providing some great imagery. Despite its status among critics and fans as where the 'rot' started to set in conceptually, Superman III remains a literal comic-book brought to life (made all the more watchable on Blu-Ray thanks to digital wire removal) .

Hot from the PC of Alexei Lambley-Steel come these 'Portrait' test shots for our evolving mock vintage Superman IV trading Card set. These prototypes represent the last of the try-outs before we begin the set proper. Alexei informs me the only amendment will be the typeface which will be even closer to the 'real' thing on the finished cards. My contribution (besides the images) is to produce the titles and copy for the card backs - there will be a title card, possibly a checklist and maybe even a sticker set to round it off in true retro style. Thanks to Superman fan Danny Fernando Rassa and his photographer friend Magda Hidalgo, we present to you these images of a Christopher Reeve "Superman" statue located within the grounds of the Bancolombia building in the city of Medellin (Colombia, South America).

Inspired by Auduste Rodin's "The Thinker", the monument in honor of Christopher Reeve, is the creation of sculptor and artist Nadin Ospina.

In an interview posted (in Spanish) on the Banco Colombia website (the largest commercial bank in Colombia) the artist explains: “Superman is the king, he's iconic, indestructible. Besides he has very interesting connotations: he is a poor little orphan, extra-terrestrial and with some very complex psychological problems and emotional difficulties. He is a very interesting personality."

To my knowledge this great little study is the first outdoor public statue in the image of Christopher Reeve's Superman and though he's presented here in a more melancholy fashion I'm sure Mr. Reeve would have nonetheless been delighted and honoured...

In a Digital age where practical sets, props and even costumes (see Green Lantern) are inevitably becoming redundant, the demand for ephemera of the old school grows more intense. As repeatedly highlighted on this blog, surviving examples of production material (otherwise destined for the skip) from your favorite Movie have steadily emerged as unique and very expensive collectables in an increasingly competitive market.
One of the original vendors allowing you a chance to own a piece of Cinema history was Christies Auction house, where their 'Film & Entertainment' lots gave access to some unprecedented material long thought lost. Indeed, their glossy, full-colour catalogues would become collectables in their own right with their lavish descriptions and accompanying photographs. Among these pages you could find everything from Charlie Chaplin's Bowler Hat & Cane from 'The Great Dictator' to a Stormtrooper Helmet from the original 'Star Wars'. Unsurprisingly, the Superman film series has also been well-represented over the last fifteen years with lots including everything from original costumes to signed photographs, often exceeding their high estimates.
Conversely, the digital age has also ushered in worldwide availability with the emergence of websites accomodating bidding from where you sit or better still ordering your coveted prop online without the competition. The greatest and most successful example of this has to be The Propstore Of London, whose staggering inventory provides both your average collector and your high-end archivist with most anything they may covet. Indeed there has never been a better time to invest and preserve your most precious Movie memories, but at a price...

Hot from the Hard Drive of SuperFan Chris King, these stunning latest shots of the 1/3 scale Superman costume show the incredible level of detail achieved in this first completed piece. Uncompromising as ever, Chris has insisted on every nuance of the suit to be replicated exactly which meant having a perfect 1/3 scale belt buckle sculpted from scratch (2nd pic down) and added to the patent yellow belt. Also note the cape patch has been embroidered rather than printed for a more authentic look. The boots are absent at present because they form part of the finished figure by Bobby C. (pics upcoming) and used as the means to seal the costume onto the figure. Much more to follow on this exciting project as it develops...

Superman Is The Topps...

In continuation of this month's Trading Card theme I present above the very first collectibles that resonated with me as a six-year old boy and became the basis of my collection.
The amazing colourful images adorning each pack of cards (In the UK they came without stickers and I always disposed of the gum!)instantly captured my imagination. My favourites were the solo publicity shots of Christopher Reeve with the New York backdrop, of which there were many (see the complete sets here) where you could really believe the Man of Steel was real and among us. Besides the nostalgia there is much to enjoy with the Topps series 1&2 including a glimpse of what we now know as deleted scenes and even cards dedicated to the creative team including Director Richard Donner. For genuine fanatics its notable the Canadian set ran for 132 cards and included French subtitles while the US set ran for 77 and the shortchanged UK for 66!
The trend would continue for the sequels (with the exception of Superman IV, see post below) but IMHO nothing came close to capturing the magic of the original white-border set and the anticipation of completing the picture puzzle on the card backs..!

All New Picture Card Series...!?

If you are convinced the images above are genuine Topps style picture card samples from an abandoned Superman IV Series then thank you very much, this project is a success.
As collectors, completists and SuperFans the world over already know, Superman IV was the only Superman film to NEVER have a Trading Card set devoted to it, a fact I always found odd considering its such a merchandising staple so one day sought to fill the gap somehow.
Now, In collaboration with and using the considerable talents and creativity of SuperFan Alexei Lambley-Steel (See his excellent blog/site here) we have endeavoured to adapt my considerable archive of quality stills from Superman IV: The Quest For Peace into a complete set of unofficial vintage style cards in a 'what if?' project to make up for a thirty-year oversight. The four samples above are a result of a great many exchanged emails, research and submissions before we both were in complete agreement the designs were 'simple' enough to emulate the real thing. To that end, all the characteristics of the typical sets of the era will also be present, from the printing flaws to the text on the rear. Stay tuned for updates but for now, enjoy the unashamed nostalgia from the age of pink bubblegum sticks!

Was there ever a more striking iconic image to help define pop-culture of the 1970's? The closest I can think of is the smiling Farah Fawcett poster and the cover of the 'Grease' album. There had been long speculation in the press at the time that 'newcomer' Christopher Reeve was 'too skinny' for the role so the Producers response was to send Reeve on special photo shoots in New York to pose on the banks of the East River and overlooking Central Park to prove the Man Of Steel was indeed real. The first hint that the production was a serious take on the legend is the fact Superman is presented here without a hint of irony in a contemporary setting in broad daylight looking as if he's just walked off of the front page of his own comic book. Reeve's steely gaze in the spectacular new Superman costume is the kind of cover editors dream of and so was used repeatedly all over the world to announce his arrival on the big screen. I know as a five year old kid picking up the issue of Starburst (bottom pic) seeing it for the first time my reaction was simply 'wow' and has been the same ever since...

Shining On Blu-Ray...

This latest addition to my collection is arguably the most definitive presentation of the Superman Movies to date. As a recent convert to the Blu-Ray format (after a great deal of persuasion to convince me of its superiority) I will state categorically that the series has never looked or sounded better and is therefore infinitely superior to DVD. That being said, the updated format lacks all the fun of DVD's (no animated menu's) and having been spoiled rotten by the sheer glory of the Ultimate Edition DVD steel tin and interior packaging, The flimsy cardboard case with pedestrian layout & generic artwork leaves much to be desired. With a far more-manageable 8-disc collection rather than 13, content-wise everything is retained and there are some nice new additions, most notably the 'Return To Krypton' deleted scene from Superman Returns. As fantastic and in-depth reviews of the features can be found online all I will add is that this set was remarkably affordable and absolutely worth making the leap in a single bound from DVD...

Ultimate 1:1 Progress - 'Super-Peepers...'

A timely update from the workshop of artist John May - the images above show the first 'dry-fit' of the amazing custom glass-eyes from Tech-Optics.com for adjustment to acheive the perfect placement. As you can see, apart from filling of the tear-ducts they are almost there. If you look closely at the top shot you can clearly see the image the sculpt was based on was the balcony scene in Superman: The Movie, where Superman tells Lois he 'Likes Pink very much'. This was the image commissioned by Chris King in an effort to have the sculpt capture the more romantic and dashing aspect of Reeve's portrayal, rather than the more common stern expressions from former attempts. This also accounts for the larger, more unwieldy kiss-curl with a more right-hand bias. The Devil is, as always, in the detail.
With the eyes fixed John will be taking his airbrush to the finely-honed lines of the sculpt to bring out its fantastic character. Stay tuned for more updates...!

More Metropolis In Miniature...

More rescued treasures from Richard Lester's Superman II. First posted about here and covered extensively in the vintage Making of Superman II Documentary (available on DVD and Blu-Ray) The Metropolis Street set and correspondng miniature were a neccersary (and expensive!) evil built at Pinewood Studios to accomodate the colossal battle between the Man Of Steel and his adversaries. Though somewhat of a dying art in special effects today, no amount of CGI could replicate the stunning detail on show in the images above nor the craftsmanship that excuted it.
My sincere thanks to Steve Cambden for providing these photographs from his archive. If you want to read more about Steve's time at Pinewood during the making of Superman II plus his adventures in Doctor Who order his amazing memoir 'The Doctor's Affect' here...

May I first congratulate you on an incredible prototype Superman figure - As I'm sure you are aware anticipation for this was incredibly high and consequently the subject matter has a very dedicated and devoted fanbase- many have waited over thirty years for this figure.

In recognition of the fact you are noted for listening to your fans when most toy companies do not I implore you to acknowledge the efforts shown here produced by two very talented artists & SuperFans with a wealth of experience in consulting and producing costumes, art and sculpture based on Christopher Reeve's unparalleled portrayal.

You'll find the amendments detailed in the images above to be slight and easily achievable but in doing so making the transition from acceptable to impeccable. Look no further than the contents of this blog to see further examples of the work of Chris King in Costume and Sebastian Columbo in Photoshop to further accurize what are already great works.

And make no mistake, these offerings are not intended to highlight any shortcomings or indeed as an attempt at critique, they are merely the goodwill of artists that are seeking the best result for the perfect figure. Yet another hot-off-the-press SUPERMANIA exclusive - while the images above at first glance would arguably pass as an authentic, full size Christopher Reeve costume, what you are seeing in fact is the development and fitting stages of an outfit for a premiere ONE THIRD scale statue. Eventually standing at an incredible 25 inches when finished, (note the the fingers in the 3rd pic down for comparison) this latest of sculptures by US SuperArtist Bob Causey is a variation of his 1:1 project and will be produced in a very limited run. Among the lucky recipients of these will be SuperFan Chris King, who has served as consultant for many Superman model projects (including mine) and has commissioned this costume to be constructed in miniature using exactly the same techniques as the full-size counterpart. Another SUPERMANIA exclusive - This gargantuan rendering of Honest Abe is a piece of the long-thought lost or destroyed prop of Mount Rushmore from Richard Lester's Superman II. Miraculously salvaged from Pinewood Studios upon completion of filming, the face still exhibits the pre-cut chunks for the shattering to occur when The Phantom Zone Villains give it the heat-vision treatment for replacement with their own portraits. Now preserved in a private collection, these rare photographs are proof the miniature survived not only its onscreen demise but the wrath of the studio bin men and maintain its rightful place in film history. In conclusion to the posts detailing the Superman Soundtrack library I present this fascinating pair of double disc releases from 1998 and 2000, respectively. These infinitely contrasting CD's are notable for being the first full rehashes of John Williams original score since the 1978 soundtrack album, supplemented by previously unreleased material. Curiously, Varese Sarabande were there first, with a 20-track adaptation ably performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Emmy Award winning (SeaQuest DSV) composer John Debney. Simply but gracefully presented, the set makes up for any lack of WB involvement by utilizing hitherto unseen paintings for Superman: The Movie by Bob Peak for the cover and liner notes (2nd and 4th pics). This, plus the never-before-published music from The Helicopter Rescue (Disc 2, Track 1) quickly made the album a must-have and somewhat of a rarity today.
Not be outdone, two years later Warner Brothers Archive label Rhino would offer a hum-dinger of a package as a sparkling update/re-issue of the original John Williams material that re-addressed the balance by offering 35 tracks of remastered music mostly peppered with previously unreleased material. Exquisitely packaged, with an astonishing holographic slipcase and colour liner-notes, this Michael Matessino-produced spectacular was thought as definitive until the discovery of even better source material during research conducted for the upcoming Superman: The Movie Special Edition on DVD. It would be the best part of a decade before the reels discovered in Pinewood's vaults would yield the ultimate box-set...

The above double-page vintage promos from 1985 culled from the pages of weekly Variety are a Cannon Films showcase published during what could be arguably described as their prime. The announcement of Superman IV was quite the coup for new producers Menachem Golan and Yoram Globus who look rather pleased (along with the board, bottom pic) with their acquisition of the Superman Motion Picture Property from the Salkinds, shortly before slashing its intended budget and ultimately delivering the picture that would kill the franchise...
My thanks to Chris King for re-assembling the artwork & Mr. Wilson for his continued generosity..

You'll Believe A Figure Can Fly...

...Onto the shelves of a million patiently waiting SuperFans! Announced last August by Hot Toys as a 'Winter 2010' release, photographs of the prototype 1/6 figure were finally released online this week creating what could only be described as fanboy hysteria. Indeed, online collector forums such as Sideshow Freaks had two threads comprising of hundreds of pages of speculation before a single picture had been shown. Was it worth the wait? Hot Toys detail often speaks for itself, though one should bear in mind this is a prototype and unlike most other Toy companies HT listen to fans and often 'tweak' details before November's release. Though the headsculpt (by renowned Korean Sculptor Arnie Kim) is a work of art in itself, pictured bottom is SuperFan Sebastian Columbo's manip side-by-side with the original, proving in Kim's hands its easily the closest likeness in any scale to date...

Mattel Movie Masters Series - Lex Luthor...

Based on this preview offered some months ago in the now-defunct Toyfare magazine I was initially skeptical about the quality of this figure and only purchased it when offered for completest sake. At first glance it seemed to be poorly rendered with only the barest resemblance to Gene Hackman but the accessories (choice of wigs/Kryptonite on a chain) nonetheless sounded compelling.
Imagine my surprise when the figure arrived (quicker than previous orders) and is arguably the best in the line so far. For whatever shortcomings the figure might have sculpt/paint-wise its clearer than ever these figures are produced with considerable love for the subject matter as exemplified in the details. Packaged in the familiar oversize transparent case as the other figures, look closely at the background card for a great rendition of Luthor's Lair and the Train Station 'Condemned' door serving as the lid of the accessories. The specifics extend to the figure itself with Lex' tasteless 70's suit adorned with lapel flower besides neckerchief and wristwatch. Even his gold ring is present and the chunk of Kryptonite is held menacingly in his hand. The case of accessories is as comprehensive as before (stand/2xpairs hands, 3xwigs) but the addition of the scale transparent plastic map of 'Lexifornia' simply has to be one of the most inspired Action Figure props of all time. And take another look at the close up of the sculpt - Its an infinately more convincing Hackman than we were led to believe which highlights a real issue;
It was recently announced that this figure would conclude the line of figures based on Superman: The Movie due to what Mattel called 'poor sales'. The fact not one decent photograph nor single piece of sufficient advertising for the line was available in advance suggest Mattel should be astounded they managed to move any units at all. The desperately sad thing is (besides the Superman figure being the weakest of the set) is plans were officially in place to produce at least the remaining Phantom Zone Villains had the line been more popular. With that in mind I implore the ever-faithful fans who have purchased the entire set to let Mattel know (through their facebook page) what a mistake they have made and campaign to resurrect the run as based on the quality of this figure, they were just hitting their stride...

Legendary Composer John Williams, while forever associated with Spielberg and Lucas is nonetheless responsible for the greatest Superhero music of all time despite twice nearly losing out on the job to Jerry Goldsmith. The Blue Box - 1978-1988

Arguably one of the finest soundtrack boxsets ever created, Superman: The Music is nothing less than a dream come true for everybody from completeists to the casual fan. As much has been written about the set already (go here) I need not go into detail save for the fact this comprehensive set is the standard by which everything else must surely be judged. This was reflected by the unprecedented frenzy of its release on Film Score Monthly's website where demand had it crashing down in moments, eventually prompting a second pressing. Notable for its premiere inclusion of the hitherto unreleased complete soundtrack to Superman IV, the liner notes (a grand book worthy of its own release) even detail the track listing of the abandoned album. Credit must go to producer Mike Matessino who made the 'Blue Box' his baby and UK SuperFan Oliver Harper, whose enthusiasm served as a conduit for the involvement of Superman II composer Ken Thorne. Yet more proof of the power and influence of the passionate fan...!

Ultimate 1:1 Progress - Super Lifecast...

A long-overdue update for this project but worth the wait as an amazing discovery has surfaced in the interim. Courtesy of Jim Bowers at CapedWonder.com is a special photograph showing a comparison between the anonymous headsculpt used for the project (far right) next to a recently unearthed genuine lifecast of Christopher Reeve! (centre). Of particular note is that the headsculpt was comissioned long before this discovery and completed with the aid of photographs alone yet the paralells are striking. Due to the 'flattening out' of the face during the procedure of lifecasting softer tissue can be compressed and expressions are usually grim or non-evident - the addition of the B&W photo by Chris King highlighting the sculpt with wider nostrils is a clear example of this.
The posts to follow will detail paint, assembly and finish but nothing could continue without the addition of the correct glass eyes. This became a problem as the original sculpt was completed without a set (apparently standard practice) for size/placement reference which meant 'standard' models would not fill the gaps. After John May made enquiries to renowned specialists Cantor & Nissel (who have experience specifically replicating Reeve's eyes) they could not match the size required. This meant the project was stalled until a customizer could be found. An extensive search on the Replica Prop Forum linked me to Tech-Optics.com, a US-based company specialising in every conceivable form of false eyes handmade to your specifications. Though there have been many full-size interpretations of Reeve's Superman, few have been so specific to attempt to not only get the right colour but include the specific patterns and 'flaws' present in the screencapture above (sent as reference) with the finished set below. This presented a unique opportunity so my thanks go out to James Alser of Tech-Optics whose patience and professionalism furnished us with what I consider to be an astonishing work of art.
In anticipation of the arrival of the eyes John May has also sent me two new pictures of early skin-tone airbrush paint tests (bottom two) and promises it will be something special when complete. Stay tuned...

Adventure Running In The Family...

Love it or loathe it, The Maid Of Might's 1984 feature is nothing if not a product of its time. Originally conceived as as the first Movie Superhero team-up, the script was hastily re-written when Christopher Reeve declined last minute to participate and it shows. What remains is a curious and somewhat humorless fairytale resplendant with pantomime villainy. Helen Slater's sensitive and vulnerable performance earned greater material while Peter O' Toole and Faye Dunaway managed to chew up the scenery regardless.
Though their choice of Director (Jeannot Szwarc) was ill-advised, the Salkind's were prudent enough to retain their effects team from the Superman series and the wirework (especially the 'Flying Ballet' sequence) has yet to be surpassed. Beligured by poor reviews and a bemused audience Supergirl has nonetheless gained a steady cult following over the years thanks in no small part to Jerry Goldsmith's stirring score.
Shown above is the definitive collectable from the movie in the form of the Anchor Bay limited Edition DVD release from 2000. Years ahead of its time in terms of content, transfer and presentation, this rare 2-disc set contained the never-before-seen directors cut of the film with all-new commentary and the vintage 'Making Of' special.
Given the existance of such excellent material and its genuine place in the Superman Cinematic canon, its omission from the upcoming Blu-Ray set is mystifying but like everything else asscociated with this picture, it deserved better...

In continuation of my last post regarding the passion and efforts of SuperFans to bring you material otherwise unseen, shown above are what I consider to be the most defining works. 'Fan edits' are a relatively new concept where software exists to simply re-edit a favorite movie to your taste & specifications. Due to their personal vision they are at best hit & miss and found more often than not taking up bandwidth on YouTube. Very occasionally, however, some projects not only revolutionise and rejuvenate certain properties but can generate such enthusiasm and buzz that major studios themselves respond and capitalise on them. The best example of this is the Superman II: Restored International Cut (RIC) that I credit with no less than being the catalyst for WB to invest in the abandoned Richard Donner Cut Of Superman II. From the top; selection of unofficial DVD's starting with the longest existing cut (often referred to as the KCOP cut) of Superman; The Movie, Superman II, The RIC and fan edit Superman Redeemed - a bizarre fusion of Superman III and IV in an experiment to make one cohesive picture...

A Collection Of Epic Proportions...

Now that the Superman Motion Picture Anthology On Blu-Ray details have been released it seems more than appropriate to revisit the hitherto definitive version on DVD. Still elegantly presented in its unique 'Steel' tin, The Limited Edition Ultimate Collectors Edition was an impressive 14 disc set that for once, really lived up to its name. Region 2 was offered similarly, although spared the comic-book and (mercifully) the 14th disc of Bryan Singer's journals. Enclosed in a fantastic lenticular slipcase (with art by Jim Bowers and Ramon Casares) the remaining packaging nonetheless suffered a higher percentage of stills & art from Superman Returns than was really warranted. Content-wise was nothing short of a dream come true for SuperFans with the inclusion of the never-before-seen reworking of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, brand-new documentary You Will Believe, The Cinematic Saga Of Superman, all the extras from the previous release and notably, finally, the presentation of the deleted scenes from Superman IV; The Quest For Peace. While the excitement of seeing the supposedly 'lost footage' was paralelled only by its awfulness, The Donner Cut was sprinkled with moments of pure magic and inspiration not felt since 1978. Not only was it a great time to be a Superman fan but for me personally, it represented the end of a very long journey peppered with campaigns and the ceaseless badgering of WB by my fellow SuperFans to get these Movies the love and attention they truly deserved. Will there ever be an official 100% complete set of all Superman material in the future? Who knows. All I do know is while its out there, you'll believe the dedication of the SuperFan will endeavour to bring it to you.

"Take Flight - Spring 2001...!"

As details slowly emerge regarding the arrival of the Superman Motion Picture Anthology on Blu-Ray in the coming months, many will remember that 2001 was a vintage year for Superfandom. Warner Brothers had planned nothing less than a limited cinema release of the newly restored and remastered Superman: The Movie followed by a sparkling new DVD release resplendent with all-new extras. The anticipation was heightened to feverish proportions when this trailer was released online (still considered the best trailer for the movie to this day) but would finally disappoint many fans by not making it back onto the big screen outside of the US.
Debate still rages over many aspects of the Superman: Special Edition DVD over anything from the 'remastered' sound to the inclusion of deleted scenes, but few denied it was a spectacular presentation with fantastic documentaries (and even Christopher Reeve's screentest, something I longed for but thought I'd never see) regardless of its cheap, unassuming 'Snapper' case.
WB would later follow the Special Edition with The Complete Superman Collection as a gleaming box-set. The debut of the sequels on DVD was a more 'vanilla' affair but no less pleasing to have the entire series in the best format of the time...

1988 was a landmark year for Superman - his 50 year anniversary was intended by DC Comics to be a grand event across all mediums. Other than making the cover of Time magazine it sadly was a subdued affair with only the best-forgotten TV special (hosted by Dana Carvey) to mark it. The film series had bowed out on a sour note with dissapointing returns and poor critical and audience response to Superman IV. Initiators of the Superman Film series, Alexander and Ilya Salkind would eventually buy the rights back from Cannon Films after premiering their SuperBoy TV show to similarly lukewarm notices. Though the series would continue for three seasons, Superman would be absent from our screens for some time. Shown above is a scarce A3 size pop-up promo card for Superman IV for video rental and below, an original copy in rental case. From my collection...

SuperLunchBox...

If you were a schoolkid in the 70's and 80's, there is a strong possibility you will have carted your dinner around in a lunchbox from Aladdin industries. With licenses ranging from 'Annie' all the way through to 'Zorro' their sets (including matching thermos flask with one gulp capacity) were robust and distinctive, often adorned with exclusive artwork on the lid.
Though boxes had been produced by Aladdin for both Superman: The Movie and Superman II, shown above is the inexplicably scarce Superman III edition. As almost all of these were put to good use back in the day (I last saw one through envious eyes in posession of a school pal) it is also rare to find one in such good condition - a testimony to their resolve. Mike Hill's Man Of Wax...

Both a labour of love and and a product of great expense and obsession, SuperFan Chris King has been responsible for comissioning and fabricating some of the greatest high-end Superman collectables ever made. His dedication to the pursuit of the perfect Superman costume lead to several differing versions before submitting definitive amendments to costumiers Action Costumes which are still in use by them today. The ambitious project shown above was a combination of said costume, (including belt made by me!) mannequin and a headsculpt (featuring glass eyes and punched hair) by UK sculptor/artist Mike Hill. If you notice more than a passing resemblance in conception to the recently offered Cinemaquette 1/4 scale statue it is no coincidence as that was crafted by Mike also. Ever the perfectionist, Chris would do further revisions of the costume and eventually sold this piece to fund those and other projects...

A recent viewing of Superman II, The Richard Donner Cut prompted a dusting off of my original script, (originally belonging to Production Illustrator Reg Hill) where I was reminded of the intended opening shown above. These pages are the only evidence of the scene's existance, however, as apparently it was never shot. The lack of the Fox Hunting scene among others accounts for Superman's late appearance in his own Movie, highlighting the fundamental problem with the Donner Cut insofar as expectations could never be met by what is, essentially, a series of unfinished shots with Richard Lester footage as glue. Despite a valiant effort by editor Michael Thau to achieve coherance with this, it ultimately ends up doing more harm than good and is best viewed as a flawed but nonetheless groundbreaking experiment.
Its also fascinating to think what potential use the above scene may have been put to in a campaign to ban foxhunting by people who shared Superman's sentiment - a law that was passed by the UK Government decades later...

The dawn of the Digital age presents many possibilities as yet fully unexploited - the concept of 'resurrecting' an actor for a posthumous appearance is still in its infancy but constantly advancing. See above digital renderings of the late Christopher Reeve (by artists I only wish I could identify to give them the full credit for their incredible work.) with the heft and stature of age as he would, could (and should) appear in an animated version of 'Superman V'. Other artists have gone one better and put the images in motion - see the best examples here and here. One can only hope in future the Movie series could be concluded in a fashion befitting of the performance emulated here and to date, unsurpassed...

Due to the enthusiastic response to the last post relating to the Mixed-Media statue and requests about its availability I should mention the statue was version one of an ongoing project by the artist some years back now. As very few of these kits were produced they seldom come up for sale but were they to be offered I would suggest visiting the statueforum or the Replica Prop Forum as a starting point where later versions can be seen (and possibly ordered).
In the meantime, enjoy the manip above of the original by Superfan Sebastian Columbo, proving once more why he should be lead consultant on anything featuring the Reeve likeness...!

Mixed Media Quarter Scale SuperStatue...

Friend and fellow Superfan Chris King is a purveyor of high-end replica props and figures. Chances are you've seen a piece commissioned or initiated by him (especially if you're a Star Wars fan) without even knowing it. The above is a typical example of Chris' unparalleled pursuit of the perfect replica to date unsurpassed by any licensed offering. Commissioned by Chris and sculpted by Philip Robinson, this chunk of solid, exquisitely cast resin was originally in six parts (body, head, hands & boots) and was clothed in a specially-tailored outfit sourced by Chris and fabricated by Philip, complete with heat-sealed emblems and vinyl belt. There is also a Hot Toys connection in the piece lineage as the paintjob was applied by noneother than J.C. Hong - providing at least some idea of how the upcoming figure from Japan may look...

This collage of images culled from the Superman IV; Deluxe Edition DVD represent a very special memory for me as this was irrefutable proof that not only did these scenes exist, but would finally, finally be released. I remember first reading the news (and nearly falling out of my chair) during a WB Q&A about the Ultimate Edition Box Set and the casual announcement that "All the footage from Superman IV had been found" and "There would be a considerable amount of deleted scenes". I still refused to believe it until I saw the list of chapters themselves for rating by the BBFC. Then upon the boxset release, Superfan Sebastian Columbo sent me the images above. Considering the footage was the subject of volumes of specualtion and debate, the only agreement across the board was that it would never be seen. A true highlight of my fandom and thanks to WB for making it happen...

Stars Hall Of Fame - Movieland Wax Museum...

The Superman exhibit in the Movieland Wax Museum had the distinction of being the first (and most expensive) installation dedicated to the blockbuster movie of 1978. Featuring a great (albeit slightly cross-eyed) likeness of Christopher Reeve, the figure also exhibited one of the original costumes from the production and was housed in a custom-made Fortress Of Solitude style set. A top attraction for many years, time and dwindling numbers meant the Museum would close its doors forever in 2005, by which time the Superman figure (in similar fashion to the display in Madame Tussauds, London) had been stripped of its original costume (see picture from google search above) before being sold in auction for $16,000 just days after the untimely death of Dana Reeve. A curious addition to the archives is this pair of unassuming tortishell eyeglasses in the style of our favorite mild-mannered Daily Planet journalist. Look closer though and you'll discover the familiar crest of his famous alter-ego on the arms and fine print confirming DC Comics endorsement in the year of the release for Superman: The Movie. I had no prior knowledge of the existance of these nor any other tie-in for eyewear related to the Movies so would like to extend my thanks to Alexei Lambley-Steel for showing me something 'new' and providing the pics from his collection...!

Susannah York - 1939 – 2011...

This month fans all over the world bode a sad but fond farewell to another one of its national treasures. You can read all about Ms. York's incredible life and career here but to many she will always be remembered as Lara - Wife of Jor-El and Mother of Kal-El in Superman: The Movie, Superman II and Superman IV: the Quest For Peace. With her role unexpectedly expanded thanks to Marlon Brando's omission due to escalating costs, her reassuring and sensitive appearance coaching her son in matters of the heart was one of the highlights of Superman II.
The autograph above was obtained for me in person while Ms. York was appearing in a play in London in the mid-2000's. It is a centrepiece of my collection...

Printed in blue presumably as a revision, this is the first instance of incorporating stills from footage already shot into storyboards I've ever seen!

Mattel Movie Masters Series - Superman...

Second in a series of Movie-faithful replicas in 1/6 scale beginning with General Zod and concluding with Lex Luthor - Pictured above is the landmark first-ever officially licensed action figure bearing the likeness of Christopher Reeve. Though specially produced for the adult collector, for $60, these figures are somewhat basic and doll-like in their execution. While the headsculpt is passable, the paintwork is sub-standard and the body (revised by Mattel after disatrous reception of the prototype revealed at SDCC '09) is still disproportionately top-heavy. As stated with Zod, these are not figures for cynics and if nothing else, fill a 30-year void. Nonetheless it is beautifully presented, the graphics of the box suitably retro and the accessories stellar (there's something very exiting about a 1/6 Green Crystal) with the exception of the boots (which should be at the very least vinyl). The costume is also an arguably reasonable representation of the screen-worn version, with nice bold chest shield replicated in yellow on the cape. Just pulled from sale by mattycollector.com, expect both this and Zod to re-appear on the site for the release of Lex Luthor in the coming months. With Hot Toys release (hopefully) fast approaching, this line will probably be notable for producing the first rather than definitive versions of these iconic characters.

Welcome to 2011 and nothing less than set-used props from Superman; The Movie for the first post! Aquired from the outstanding team at the Propstore of London , this set comprises of (from the top) Genuine Daily Planet typewriter paper (as seen in close-up) A Planet envelope (as carried by Clark for Lois to the changing room) a sheet of notepaper and finally an address slip. These were all created as set dressing/functional props to litter the busy Newspaper office and used throughout all four movies. Check out Propstore's site for even more Superman rarities!!

As mentioned in previous posts, running concurrently with John May's work on the Superman mannequin is an ultimate costume project headed by SuperFan Sebsatian Columbo. Still in development as a result of hard research (with thanks on my part to Chris King who provided the early mockup of the costumed mannequin pictured top) and all-new measurements from a real Reeve costume provided with the kind assistance of supermanjaviolivaresnews.blogspot.com, acheiving the most screen-accurate replica is closer to reality than ever before. Pictured above is Sebas protoypes for the costume and cape symbols with their respective fabrics and bottom is the finished belt made by me utilizing a resin cast of an original belt buckle.
This is my last post before New Year so I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their continued support during this first year of SUPERMANIA and in return I promise to keep the rarities and suprises coming in 2011 so please, stay tuned and Happy New Year to all SuperFans...!

Kris Meadows Custom Portrait Figure...

With the availability of Christopher Reeve's likeness finally available to toy companies and in great anticipation of Hot Toys revealing their take on The Real Man Of Steel, shown above is the greatest representation to date of Reeve in action figure form. Totally handmade using cast parts from various 1/6 action figures topped with an all-original headsculpt, US artist Kristopher Meadows first submitted his prototype (pictured top) for a custom figure competition in the pages of Tomart's Action Figure Digest in the mid-nineties. Based on euphoric fan reaction Kris then produced a VERY limited run for a few lucky collectors. From the screen-accurate costume fabric to the real leather boots, this custom has a quality unsurpassed by many of today's offerings having been produced by a passionate fan with considerable care and attention. Christopher Reeve himself endorsed the artist later in the years before his passing by having one of Meadows portraits hanging from the wall of his office...

Yet another SUPERMANIA exclusive - these steel printing plates (measuring approx. 15 1/2 x 21cm) surfaced in Australia and featured in an auction of original art. Showcasing previously unseen artwork by renowned poster artist Daniel Goozee, the influence of his famous James Bond posters is clearly evident in the sketches above. From the top - Amazing renderings of Christopher Reeve battling himself in the junkyard with Richard Pryor looking on; An obvious homage to Octopussy as Superman contends with Disco babes with Pryor clinging onto his ankles and a clear Ken Adam/Moonraker take on Ross Webster's lair with Robert Vaughn and Pryor conspiring against a backdrop of even more Bond babes. Although beautifully executed, alternate Goozee art (featuring Reeve and Pryor airborne) was utilized for the teaser poster for Superman III but Goozee would go on to complete the quartet by painting the final art for the poster for Superman IV. The Man Of Silicone...

US Based sculptor Bob Causey is arguably the most prolific and talented sculptor of Superhero properties in the world. Having perfectly rendered in silicone everything from Ron Perlman's Hellboy to Heath Ledger's Joker, this is maybe his fourth attempt at capturing the iconic face of Christopher Reeve and apparently has gone one better and brought him back to life...!
On the left is the prototype with temporary glass eyes and without final makeup (Which will be completed using one of Stuart Freeborn's original makeup charts for Reeve) and on the right is SuperFan and artist Sebastian Columbo's digital rendering of how the final piece may look. The future for this piece is under option now as there will be more than one version with at least one being offered for purchase by Hollywood Collectables Group...
